HIPE (Hybrid Intelligence Planning Engine) is an AI-powered planning tool co-developed by Gradient and Dutch public transport operators EBS, RET & HTM. It helps public transport planners build more accurate and realistic schedules for buses and trams, HIPE uses explainable machine learning models grounded in real-world data like traffic, weather, and passenger load.
Unlike traditional tools, HIPE doesn’t just generate predictions, it explains them. The system shows how and why certain travel times are proposed, empowering planners to make informed decisions, and stay in full control. HIPE blends human expertise with AI-driven insight to make public transport more efficient and resilient.

Secure AI
HIPE is built entirely on publicly available data. It uses transparent, open-source machine learning methods, ensuring full transparancy into how predictions are made. While models can be complex, their behavior is explainable and auditable, making the system trustworthy by design. This way HIPE stays future-proof, verifiable, and aligned with public sector values.
Reliable AI
Scheduling is too important for guesswork. HIPE uses interpretable machine learning trained on various historic data sources to deliver consistently accurate travel time predictions. It accounts for time of day, day of the week, check-ins, traffic, and more. Every prediction is traceable and can be validated by planners, making it easier to trust and outperform traditional scheduling methods.
